What are pay-by-plate tolls and how do they work?

Zipcar now uses the pay-by-plate method to calculate toll charges. When you drive through a toll lane, a camera captures your license plate and the toll is billed to your account. You’ll typically see the charge on your invoice within 2–3 weeks.

As of January 2024, the Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission expanded pay-by-plate service to seven of its older toll bridges, which previously accepted only E-ZPass or cash.

If you approach a toll plaza with only E-ZPass or cash lanes, simply drive through the E-ZPass lane. You’ll still be charged using the pay-by-plate method.
