Insurance Coverage

Every member in good standing who complies with the membership contract is covered while driving a Zipcar. Here are the highlights:

Third party auto liability coverage for accidents occurring in the U.S.*

Members under 21:

  • Receive liability coverage up to the minimum financial responsibility limits required in the state/jurisdiction in which the accident occurs

Members 21 and over:

  • who joined August 1, 2018 or after
    • Receive liability coverage up to the minimum financial responsibility limits required in the state/jurisdiction in which the accident occurs
  • who joined March 1, 2015 through July 31, 2018
    • Receive liability coverage of $100,000 bodily injury per person, $300,000 bodily injury maximum, $25,000 property damage
  • who joined prior to March 1, 2015
    • Receive liability coverage of $300,000 CSL (combined single limit) per accident

 

Third party auto liability coverage for accidents occurring in Canada

Members receive liability coverage of $1,000,000, plus provincial minimum levels for other statutorily required coverages, and is subject to all its terms, conditions, and exclusions.

*Please note that coverage may be provided under a certificate of self-insurance, insurance policy, or both.  Zipcar also provides Personal Injury Protection (PIP), or "no-fault" coverage, at the level required by the state/jurisdiction in which the accident occurs.  Members who joined Zipcar on a plan affiliated with a business, university or other entity may have different insurance coverage. 

For further information about the required state minimum financial responsibility limits, we encourage you to check with the relevant state insurance department or office of motor vehicles to determine what the requirements are.

Separate of the third party auto liability coverage described above, Members are responsible for a fee of up to the first $1,000 of damage to the Zipcar vehicle per incident (“damage fee”), which can be reduced or eliminated with the purchase of an optional damage fee waiver.  To purchase a damage fee waiver, visit your account here.
