Zipcar Fees & Fines

In addition to the cost of Zipcar membership and standard driving rates, other fees and fines may apply. See below for details.

Standard Fees & Charges

Application fee

A one-time $25 application fee is applied when a driver applies for membership. This fee offsets costs for pulling driving records and reviewing and approving applications. The application fee is non-refundable and is charged whether or not the driver is approved for membership. 

Certain membership plans and promotions may waive the application fee. A user who has closed their account recently can open it again within 30 days without paying an application fee.

Business account setup fee

A one-time $75 account setup fee is applied when a Business account is created. This fee offsets costs for account set up. The account setup fee is non-refundable. Certain membership plans and promotions may waive the account setup fee.

Young driver fee

We charge a young driver fee to members ages 18-24 who are booking a trip in the US. The fee does not apply for trips started after a member turns 25. Certain membership plans may be exempt from the young driver fee.

  • For members 18-20, the young driver fee is $1 per hour and $12 per day.
  • For members 21-24, the young driver fee is $0.70 per hour and $10 per day.

For members reserving Zipcars in New York metro area only:

  • For members 18-20 years old, the young driver fee is $3 per hour and $50 per day.
  • For members 21-24 years old, the young driver fee is $2 per hour and $25 per day.

The young driver fee will be included in the total trip cost. We’ll itemize and show this fee before you confirm your trip.

If you turn 25 during your trip, the fee will still apply and can't be refunded.

Mileage fee

There's not a limit on how far you can drive your Zipcar, but there is a limit on how many of those miles are included in your trip.

Zipcars in the United States:

Most trips comes with a free 180 miles and reservations longer than 24 hours get even more:

  • 180 free miles for each 24-hour period
  • 20 free miles for each additional hour of your reservation until you reach 180 miles

All additional mileage will be billed at $0.58/mile when your reservation ends.

Note

Pay per-mile cars and some membership plans do not receive free miles.

Zipcars in Canada

Most trips comes with a free 200 kilometers and reservations longer than 24 hours get even more:

  • 200 free kilometers for each 24-hour period
  • 15 free kilometers for each additional hour of your reservation until you reach 200 kilometers

All additional mileage will be billed at $0.50/kilometer when your reservation ends.

Reservation change or cancellation fee 

There is no charge if you cancel or shorten your reservation with the required advance notice, but if you don't cancel or shorten within the required timeframe, you're responsible for the full amount of the reservation. Toll charges

All toll charges will be billed to your account after the reservation ends. It may take a few days for Zipcar to learn of the tolls from the municipality so we add tolls on your account as a pending charge. Learn more about our Toll passes and policies.

Market-specific fees and taxes

Depending on where you live, local fees and taxes may also be applied to the cost of your trip. Learn more about local taxes. 

Zipcard Replacement

One free replacement card per year ($15 for each additional card). Learn more about your Zipcard.

Zipcar Fines

No one likes to talk about fines, but they do happen from time-to-time. Below are fines which may be incurred if Zipcar policies are violated. 

  • Late Returns: $50 per hour (up to a maximum of $150), plus the vehicle usage charges.
  • Low Gas: $30 if you return a vehicle with less than 1/4 tank of gas.
  • Ignition Key Replacement: The cost of the replacement key if you lose the key.
  • Vehicle Retrieval Fee: $139 flat fee if you do not return the Zipcar back to its home location by the end of your trip. 
  • Roadside Assistance: $139 flat fee for roadside assistance due to member error such as running out of gas.
  • Tickets/Violation Processing: You are also responsible for paying any parking tickets and moving violations incurred during your reservation. If we receive a notice and process a violation, you will be charged a $30 processing fee.
  • Damages: Up to $1,000 to cover the costs related to an accident. 
  • Cleaning or Other Violations: $50 per violation, plus costs incurred by Zipcar anytime a visit to the vehicle is required (examples include: condition of the car, smoking violation, pet hair).
